You typed the whole line before you noticed the layout

Instead of a word there is «ghbdtn». You delete it, switch the layout and type it again — several times a day. Smart Keyboard does it for you the moment the word ends.

What it looks like

  1. 1In Settings → Smart Keyboard, flip the «Turn on Smart Keyboard» switch. If Accessibility is not granted yet, VerbaIDE asks for it to listen to keys and type corrections.
  2. 2Type as usual. When a word ends — with a space, a comma or a full stop — Smart Keyboard checks whether it came out in the wrong layout or with a slip.
  3. 3If it did, the word is replaced and the system layout switches, so the next word comes out right: «ghbdtn » turns into «привет ».
  4. 4Not what you meant? Press ⇧ twice: the word and the layout come back. Press ⇧ twice again and the fix returns.

What it fixes

On the left is what you typed, on the right what stays on the screen. Each fix happens when the word ends.

  • A word in the wrong layoutghbdtnпривет
  • The same, the other way roundруддщhello
  • Short words, together with the word next to themz cksieя слышуTyped on the English layout. A lone «z» is never changed by itself — only together with the next word.
  • A Ukrainian word on the Russian layoutтыльки однетільки одне
  • A word that exists in both languages: the words around it decideкак ті думаешькак ты думаешь«ті» is a real Ukrainian word, but «как» and «думаешь» are Russian, so it becomes «ты» once «думаешь» is typed.
  • A letter from the other alphabet inside a wordEnglшshEnglishYou clicked into a word to add a letter, and the layout was the other one. The letter is replaced and the layout switches to the word’s language, so the next letters come out right.
  • Nothing to fix, but the language changed: only the layout switchesкак думаешькак думаешьTyped on the Ukrainian layout. These words come out the same on both layouts and both are Russian, so after the second one the layout switches to Russian, and the next «ты» comes out right the first time.
  • A typo in the right layoutbecuase · freind · првиетbecause · friend · привет
  • Two or three slips in one wordlaighibng · pratcivcelaughing · practiceWith «Fix typos using the sentence» on, a local model looks at the words before the typo and picks the word that fits.
  • The wrong layout and a typo at onceghdbtnпривет

What you can set

All of it is in Settings → Smart Keyboard. Smart Keyboard is a paid feature: it is part of the paid plan and of the 30-day trial.

Three pairsEnglish ↔ Russian, English ↔ Ukrainian and Russian ↔ Ukrainian. Each can be turned off. A pair whose layout is not installed stays grey until you add it in System Settings → Keyboard.
Typos«Fix typos» is on by default and touches only words the macOS spell checker does not know. One slip — a wrong, missing or extra letter, or two letters swapped — is fixed from the spell checker’s suggestions. With «Fix typos using the sentence», also on by default, a local model picks among dictionary words up to two or three slips away, by the words before the typo.
How far back to look1 to 5 previous words, or up to the start of the sentence — the default, at most 15 words. Previous words are what lets a short word be fixed together with its neighbour.
Undo⇧ twice by default; ⌘ twice, ⌥ twice or your own shortcut also work. The menu has «Undo Last Correction». Undo only takes back what you typed this time; to make Smart Keyboard never touch a word, add it to «Words to leave alone» in Settings.
Layouts and keysSwitch the system layout after a fix — on. Also fix on Enter and Tab — off: in a chat the message is already sent by then. Do not fix while a layout you pick is on.
ExtrasA shortcut to turn Smart Keyboard on and off, a «Convert selected text» shortcut for a line typed in the wrong layout, and a sound on each fix. All optional.

What it leaves alone

A fix in the wrong place costs more than a wrong layout, so these are never touched.

PasswordsPassword fields and anything else under macOS secure input: macOS hides those keys from every app. A field marked as a password is skipped even when its app forgets to turn secure input on.
Code and terminalsTerminals, code editors, remote desktops and password managers are excluded by default. The list is yours to edit.
Search boxes and address barsThey complete words on their own, and a fix would fight that. Smart Keyboard skips them.
Text from VerbaIDEDictation, the secretary, translation and «Paste the last one» are not corrected afterwards.
Real wordsA word the macOS dictionary knows is never treated as a typo. «Slack», «PR», «API» in a Russian sentence stay as typed.
Your listsWords to leave alone, apps you excluded, and layouts you chose to skip.

Add a word to «Words to leave alone» in Settings, and Smart Keyboard never fixes it.

What it will not catch

Before writing any code we set one rule: at most one wrong replacement per 10,000 correctly typed words. Keeping to it means some mistakes stay.

Not every typoOn our test texts, with the sentence model on, it fixed about four English one-slip typos out of five, three Russian out of four and two Ukrainian out of five; with two slips — about half in English and Russian and one in ten in Ukrainian. The rest stay as typed.
Words macOS does not knowA word neither macOS nor the built-in dictionaries know — jargon like «деплое», a rare name — can look like a typo of a common word. Press ⇧ twice to take back the fix; to keep that word from being touched ever again, add it to «Words to leave alone» in Settings. A real word in the wrong place («тот» instead of «той») is not touched at all: that takes grammar.
Short words, three slips at mostTypos are checked from 4 letters (without the sentence model, from 5 in Russian and Ukrainian). Two slips are fixed from 4 letters, three only in words of 8 letters or more. «какдела» without a space stays as it is.
Keys the two layouts shareThe Russian and Ukrainian layouts share almost every key. A word made only of shared keys («привет», «как») comes out the same on both, so there is nothing to fix.
Enter, Tab and some appsA fix comes after the key, so with «Also fix on Enter and Tab» on a chat message is already sent. Some fields, often in Electron apps, do not show their text to macOS: there a letter inside a word and typos are not fixed.
Another layout switcherTwo fixers on one word get in each other’s way. If Punto Switcher, Caramba Switcher or a similar app is running, Settings names it so you can turn one off.

What it costs

Smart Keyboard is a paid feature. It is part of the paid plan and opens with the 30-day trial, which starts by itself after you sign up in the first-run wizard. Dictation in your own language stays free forever.

Processing on your Mac

Keys are processed on your Mac. Typed text is not recorded in history or logs and is never sent out; the words you add to the exception list are saved only in that local list: memory holds only the current word, the previous words up to your setting (at most 15) and the last fix, for undo. Before some fixes Smart Keyboard reads up to 64 characters on each side of the cursor and forgets them right after. The «leave alone» list is stored only on this Mac. For borderline words and for typos it may ask a local model on your Mac: it sees only the words of the current sentence and the possible fixes, in memory. That model downloads once from cdn.verbaide.com when Smart Keyboard starts listening — the same model and address as the term judge.
